Surgical Equipment

CUSA Excel is a Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator and a vital piece of equipment in liver cancer surgery. The machine has a handpiece with an oscillating tip which is used to fragment tissue, such as cells, when it comes into contact with it. It can be set so it only damages these cells and not the vital blood vessels which must be avoided during surgery. The handpiece has an attachment that sucks away the unwanted cells. The surgeon is then able to remove the tumour safely.

RITA is a radio frequency ablator. This piece of equipment provides a new and effective procedure for inoperable liver cancer tumours. Radio frequency is used to create heat in a specific place, at a specific temperature for a specific time and ultimately results in destroying unwanted tissue.

This equipment is used by Nariman Karanjia at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford where he has set up a centre for hepatic surgery for those with cancer of the liver. The state-of-the-art equipment ensures liver surgery is a safe procedure with a low complication rate.

The hospital is known as a centre of excellence for cancer services.

Diagnostic Equipment

Terason 2000 is a handheld ultrasound system and is capable of delivering the same excellent image quality and imaging features of the traditional large ultrasound systems. The company has been given a prestigious award for developing the technology that led to the production of the Terason 2000. As a handheld system it has immense advantages in liver cancer surgery and is a powerful tool for imaging tumours, some of which are deeply embedded in the liver.

It just looks like a laptop computer.
